EV manufacturer Rivian is advancing its vehicle lineup with plans for the 2027 Rivian R1S, according to Rivian. The flagship three-row electric sport utility vehicle continues to serve as a cornerstone of the brand's premium consumer offerings as the company optimizes production efficiencies at its manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois.

Following the introduction of its second-generation R1 platform, which debuted for the 2025 model year, Rivian has focused on simplifying its manufacturing processes. According to SEC filings, the company overhauled its production line to eliminate over 100 parts from the battery pack assembly and hundreds of parts from the body shop. These engineering changes lay the groundwork for upcoming iterations, including the 2027 model year R1S.

In official quarterly reports submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Rivian highlighted its focus on achieving cost parity and positive gross margins. The platform updates implemented in the mid-2024 factory shutdown reduced material costs significantly. The 2027 R1S will benefit from these structural cost reductions and the integration of zonal electrical architecture, which replaces dozens of electronic control units (ECUs) with just a few stack-integrated physical systems.
