Startup Hop Aero is entering the logistics landscape with a focus on suborbital rocket transport, aiming to resolve bottlenecks in time-sensitive freight delivery. The company, which recently emerged via the Y Combinator accelerator, is designing a vehicle known as Rook to transport cargo over distances of several hundred kilometers in just minutes. According to Payload Space, the company’s vision is to enable autonomous, point-to-point logistics that can land on unprepared surfaces, potentially serving both military and commercial markets in contested or remote areas.
The development strategy for the Rook series centers on versatility and speed. The Rook Two model is designed to reach a height of roughly 6 meters and carry 250 kilograms of cargo across a range of approximately 750 kilometers. By utilizing a proprietary software suite dubbed hopOS—modeled after internal tools used at SpaceX—Hop Aero claims it can drastically shorten development cycles. The company has already successfully conducted a tethered test of a smaller prototype at the Infinity One Oklahoma Spaceport and completed hot-fire engine testing shortly after the software-driven design phase.
Unlike competitors focusing on orbital reentry systems, Hop Aero is prioritizing suborbital "hops" to avoid the hazards and complexities of on-orbit cargo storage. The initiative is supported by a $1.25 million Direct-to-Phase-II SBIR award from the Air Force Research Laboratory, specifically targeting a program known as "Rapid Operations Over Kilometers." While the project remains in the research and development stage, the company’s leadership draws inspiration from past logistics failures where traditional aircraft were grounded by weather or courier reliability issues. As the industry continues to explore rocket-based delivery, Hop Aero’s success will ultimately depend on its ability to master precise, intact landings following hypersonic flight while achieving cost-competitiveness against existing high-speed shipping alternatives.
